Can vitamin supplements degrade in the mail?

Sometimes I order vitamins, herbs and other supplements online that take more than a week to ship. I’ve heard reports that insulin can degrade in the mail, but I don’t know if the same thing could happen for vitamins. Would their potency diminish significantly if they’re sitting in hot trucks and warehouses for a week or more?

I would not worry about it. Think about buying vitamins at stores – how do they get there? The same way the ones you order get to your home. They sit in warehouses, then get put on delivery trucks, then get unloaded to the stores, where they probably sit on shelves for longer than they do at your home.

I don’t know what type of vitamins you take, but most commercial vitamins are developed to be able to sit in their bottles for a while without degrading. This being said, most vitamins contain only the preservative form, and that’s why it’s important to not only rely on the pill form of vitamins but also on whole foods such as fruits and vegetables, which contain the whole form of the vitamin instead of just the preservative. So also try to eat your share of fruits and vegetables every day.
